Exerpts from Gap Creek
When I thought of a boy I always thought of somebody I could give in to. Not one of these nervous boys that couldn’t hardly look at you without blinking. I thought of a strong man that knowed what he wanted and could teach you. I wanted a body that meant to go somewhere. I guess I wanted a man instead of a boy.
Now a look can tell you more than hundreds of words. If it’s the right look at the right time. A look can go through your face and eyes right inside you.
This is not me. This is better than me. This is better than I deserve. And I thought, No, this is what I have been waiting got; this is what the future is going to be like.
Worry never made anybody live a second longer
It was too perfect to think on. Nothing ever worked out that perfect in this world. And if I wanted it too bad it would never happen. The world was made so most people never got what they wanted most. Or maybe they wanted most what they couldn’t get.
I was not good at waiting for somebody. When I’m waiting I get flustered and hot and think aboutall the things that could go wrong. And the more nervous I am, the more I worry and get aggravated. When I’m waiting time slows down till it mocks me. When I keep waiting for somebody to come I feel like I’m going to fall to pieces. They only thing to do is not wait at all, but to get on with whatever you’re doing.
Anybody with a clear conscience can sleep.
When you’re tired it’s like all the force in the world works against you. Takes extra effort just to do little things. You feel it takes willpower just to breathe.
I don’t know what it is about a quarrel that stirs the body so.
If you waited til everything was perfect to celebrate, you might never celebrate anything.
I discovered hunger don’t make you resentful. Hunger makes you slow and brooding, like you are just waiting and waiting. You don’t feel like going anywhere or doing anything. Hunger makes you set around, makes you want to go to bed early and sleep late. You don’t want to think about nothing; for if you think you will think about good things to eat. When you’re hungry you do not want to think at all. You want time to pass. You are waiting for something to happen. You don’t want to waste the effort. You are saving the fat on your bones and the strength in your blood. You are saving your breath. When you’re hungry you don’t day dream a lot. You just drift through the hours and the first thing you know another day is over, another night has gone by. Mostly you want to forget.

She Expected the World…

Life is a funny thing. We think we know what we want or what we need. When we “get” it we aren’t always satisfied. What ever it is doesn’t live up to our expectations. As I’m “on my own” now – new apartment, new job(s), dating my boyfriend, etc. – my mind has been opened. by new people who I’ve encountered. Many of their lifestyles and beliefs are different from my own. I have begun questioning my views on certain issues. Being curious is a normal, healthy part of growing up. If we stayed the same our whole lives we would never develop ourselves. It’s easy to recognize this curiosity with children. They are always wondering why we do what we do, how things are made, what words mean (trust me on this one, I’m a nanny). A lot of topics they ask about are things we don’t even know the answers to. They are principles that we’ve always been taught and never really learn why. How many times have you heard the phrase ”because I said so”?
. When we question issues we begin to figure out what we believe in – it either confirms what you thought or they’re altered.
Lately it’s becoming more difficult to decipher what I believe vs. what others think I should believe. I feel like a puppet. Like I’m just being strung along, tossed amongst the waves at sea. When we seek advice does mother really “know best”? Listening with an open-mind. You don’t necessarily have to believe everything that someone else does, sometimes it’s just nice to hear another’s opinion. I just feel like my inner-self/beliefs contradict how I live my life… I don’t feel like I am making the impact that I want to be. I need to do some soul-searching this weekend… Fun times!

Last year I posted a “recap” of my monthly highlights In order to track the progress I’ve made and reminisce! Books – Enduring Love by Ian McEwan & A Woman of Independent Means by Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey
Quotes from Enduring Love:
“I thought how the brain was such a delicate, fine-filigreed thing that it could not even fake a change in its emotional state without transforming the condition of a million other unfelt circles.”
“We are highly adaptive creatures. The predictable becomes, by definition, background, leaving the attention uncluttered, the better to deal with the random or unexpected.”
Quotes from A Woman of Independent Means:
“Children squander the present because they think it will never end. It is up to the adults who love them to impose the form and meaning that will make each day worth reliving in memory.”
“For a marriage to succeed, each partner should be excited by the abilities of the other and not feel threatened by an interest that is not shared. You must not begin your marriage by denying all that you are or you will never develop into all that you can be. There is no challenge in the world like the loving presence of someone who believes the best of you.”
Movies – Les Miserables – The Impossible, Beasts of Southern Wild, Liberal Arts, 10 Years, Bernie, Hitchcock
*Bolded Titles are ones that I particularly enjoyed!*
