Day Tripper

I had wanted to go check out the town because their community college has an Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program that I’ve been interested in. Although the campus wasn’t open I still wanted to go and get a feel for the location before I scheduled a visit with the academic advisor.
We stopped by the visitor’s center which was naturally and old train station to pick up several brochures. I’m such a “travel nerd”. I like learning all about a place’s history, info, what to do, where to eat, etc. By then our tummies were rumbling so we made a bee line to Collin Street Bakery for sandwiches and sweet treats. They are famous for their fruit cakes and have been featured on the food Network. Super cute (and yummy) place to check out.
Before heading out-of-town we visited the Pioneer Village. Like I mentioned, I love history, especially the “pioneer era.” When I was younger my parents would read the Little House on the Prairie books to me over and over again. I’ve even visited a few of her family’s homesteads on family road trips while passing through Missouri. Call me silly, but I’ve always dreamed on being a pioneer! It definitely would be a much “simpler” life (no electronics and modern conveniences), but definitely tough, physical work! Now I want to be a farmer…
Overall I enjoyed our little excursion. If I choose to become on Occupational Therapy Assistant this Navarro College has one of the top programs, and it’s very reasonably priced which is a major plus. The college’s campus was nice with several big trees and a planetarium, civil war (another one of my favorite eras!), and Western Art museum. Taking classes there would be a big switch for me since I have already graduated from a university. I think I decided that IF I choose to go there I do not think I could live there. While it’s a cute, small town, I am NOT a country girl. Don’t get me wrong, I like fresh air, being outside, and quiet. Overall I’m a laid-back person, but one thing I’ve learned is that I need things to do/entertainment (at least options). Boredom + me = too much time to think which is dangerous! I would try to schedule my classes for two days a week. Commuting 1.5 hours twice a week could be doable, especially since I would be saving money living at home. I am just not sure that scheduling my classes like that would be possible (that’s one of the things I’ll have to discuss with the advisor).
Are you a country or city person?!

I’m a middle ground girl. Cities are to crowded for me, but the country is to far from civilization. Small towns with a variety of small shops, school productions, local dance productions, and few other activities would satisfy me.
Although, I think in this case I’m a country girl, maybe??
Hour and 1/2 is a long drive, but if it’s just 2 days a way maybe not so bad…
Are you sure there’s nothing to do in the town? Or is it simply just not obvious?
I like having the option to drive one direction to the country and one direction to the city. Suburbia?! lol
There are a few movie theatres and coffee shops with live music so it’s not like there is NOTHING to do… The college town I lived in last year was much bigger and had more options/variety of things to do and I was still quite miserable. I think it all comes down to WHO is around. Most of my friends there commuted so they were gone on the weekend and I was bored and didn’t want to always go out by myself. I could always try to make new friends but it also seemed like a commuter school and I’d be older than most of my classmates (since I already completed my four-year degree). We’ll see what happens. First I have to apply and be accepted to the program before worrying about minor details! lol
I think Suburbia, is exactly right!!
I wonder although, you and I aren’t worrying about the details quite yet if maybe you could start off as a commuter and make friends. Then at some point move up there if you find that it would work out better or you fancy to do so.
Still, it sounds to me like, it’s not where you’ll be at that will make or break the experience, but what you make out of it. Did you live in a dorm for your under grad??
Who knows! One step at a time. One day at a time. Keep it simple and be present in the now. Just like your blog title!
You know I’m only 18 and we seem to get a long just fine! Age isn’t always a deciding factor for friendships, even if our school system makes it feel that way sometimes.
P.S: I think the town sounds lovely and wish I could attend school and live there and keep you company. Would be enchanting.
I stumbled upon your blog from Iowa Girl Eats site. I really like what you’ve posted
I’ll have to follow in the future.
That bake shop looks amazing and you can’t beat 1.65$ for a giant cookie
